User adoption is always a hot topic in the Workday world 🔥 So in today’s newsletter, we share a winning 🏆 example of how to use custom reporting (with minimal setup) to help your employees get more out of Workday.

A key driver of user adoption is optimizing employee experience. The goal is to make Workday so useful for your employees they’ll actually want to log back in 😎

Hang out with us for the next 10 minutes, and we’ll teach you how to massively upgrade your employees’ Pay Change History view with a single custom report… that you can build yourself in 30 minutes (or less).

Let’s get to it, shall we?!

A Quick Look at What the WD-Delivered Pay Change History Report Lacks…

Let’s start by taking a look at the WD-delivered Pay Change History tab to review its deficiencies.

Open up your SBX tenant and route to a worker’s Compensation profile.

Do you see that Pay Change History tab?

(If you don’t, this section isn’t configured to display in your tenant. Click here for quick instructions on how to display it.)

The information on the Pay Change History tab may look fine and dandy at first glance...

BUT the more you review it (and the more compensation transactions you process in your tenant), you’ll soon realize it has deficiencies you can solve for with a custom report.

Let’s take a closer look with two examples…

Example 1: An employee with fixed pay (no variable income)

We’re visual people here at Well Built Solutions, so here’s a marked-up screenshot of the WD-delivered Pay Change History report, calling out what’s lacking…

BEFORE: WD-delivered Pay Change History Tab

Take a good look at the screenshot above and imagine you’re an employee reviewing this report on your Worker Profile. What could be improved?

Here’s what we notice. The delivered report is…

Repetitive, unclear, and tailored to administrators

The Compensation Action (event link) and Reason columns are duplicative and highly administrative-focused fields. They take up space without providing meaning or value to your employees.

Notice how the Reason column displays the ENTIRE business process reason (category AND subcategory). It’s repetitive, unnecessary, and potentially confusing for your employees. This view likely creates more questions than answers 🤔

Currency symbols aren’t shown on the amounts—another unfriendly miss that makes the information more difficult to comprehend at first glance.

While these may feel like small deficiencies, this view of pay change history isn’t helpful for your employees.

So let’s fix this view by replacing this tab with a custom report…

AFTER: Custom Report Replacing the WD-delivered Pay Change History Tab

See the difference already?

Clean, clear, and tailored to employees…

The compensation event link is displayed as a magnifying glass symbol so it’s available to admins but not confusing for employees. The Reason only shows the subcategory, making it easy to understand why there was a pay change. Currency symbols are displayed in front of the amount fields—“This is a report about my money. Got it!” 🤑

Example 2: An employee with fixed pay and variable income (a.k.a., On-Target Earnings or OTE)
BEFORE: WD-delivered Pay Change History Tab

OTE or Commission Amounts aren’t shown, which doesn’t offer employees with variable pay a complete picture of their compensation.

Events without a true amount change are displayed, which makes it seem like a mistake.

AFTER: Custom Report as the Pay Change History Tab

All relevant details for the event display, as applicable.

Report only shows compensation change events with a qualifying amount change.

As you can see, you can solve ALL these deficiencies (and more!) by creating your own custom Pay Change History report to replace the WD-delivered tab.

💡 Making this configuration change gives you control over what compensation change data you display to your employees, how it looks, and who can view it.

It’s quick and straightforward to do!

In the next section, we show you how, step-by-step. 📝
