In Part I, you got the foundations — what makes a Matrix report a matrix, how to think about Row and Column Groupings, and how to build a clean headcount summary using Count.

But Count is just the entry point.

Workday delivers six other ways to summarize your data — and once you know how to wield them, your Matrix reports move beyond simple summary tables and into actual analytical tools 📊

Let's get into it 💪

The six other ways to summarize

Before you build anything, here's the lay of the land.

Workday delivers seven summarization types total — Count is just the one you already know.

Here's the full menu:

  • Count — count Business Object instances per group

  • Count Distinct — count the unique values of a chosen field per group

  • Sum — add up the values of a numeric or currency field

  • Average — average the values of a numeric or currency field

  • Minimum — return the lowest value

  • Maximum — return the highest value

  • Percentile — return the value at the Xth percentile of the population

Workday also lets you build your own Calculations on top of these, but that’s coming in a future installment

Knowing the menu is one thing. Knowing which one to reach for — and how to set it up well — is another. That’s what you learn here 🤓

As always, thank you for being a reader!

We’re celebrating you and your unicorn status 🦄

Until next time,

the Well Built Team 🌞🏗️
