Last time in this series, we covered Detail Data — the pop-up table that appears when you click a summarized number in a Matrix report, and how to configure the columns to surface meaningful data about the instances that make it up.
But the standard Detail Data setup has a built-in limitation: it applies the same set of columns to every summarization in your report. That works fine when your summarizations answer similar questions. But it can become a lot of irrelevant noise the moment they're not!
In this issue, we get into the customization layer: Detail Data Overrides. This feature is how you give each summarization its own custom drill experience when the matrix data isn’t “one-size-fits-all”.
Let's get into it 💪
When one Detail Data isn't enough
Picture this. You build a Matrix report with three summarizations, all by Job Family Group:
Count of Workers
Sum of Total Base Pay Annualized in Reporting Currency
Sum of Estimated Bonus Payouts
Sum of Completed One-Time Payment Amounts
Each one of those numbers raises a different validation question.
Click into Count and you may just want to see the workers themselves — name, ID, hire date.
Click into Base Pay and you want to see local currency, frequency, compa-ratio — the stuff that proves the conversion math worked and orients the worker within their pay range (just like we set up in Part 4).
Click into Bonus and you want to see Job Level, target bonus percent, performance rating — the stuff that drives bonus eligibility and amounts.
But with one shared Detail Data setup, all three of those numbers drill to the same pop-up with the same columns. So either:
your Base Pay drill is cluttered with bonus context that doesn't matter,
your Bonus drill is missing the fields you need to validate it, or
your Count drill has 12 comp columns that go well beyond answering "who's in this number?"
That muddied set of data is exactly what Detail Data Overrides solve 🤓
This is where the good stuff lives.
