If you've spent any time building payroll reports in Workday, you've probably discovered that out-of-the-box reporting leaves a little something to be desired 📦️ ➡️ 🥴

But fortunately, Workday gives you a pretty capable toolbox of calc field types you can use to fill in the gaps!

In this guide, you’ll combine four calc fields (fondly referred to as building “nested” calc fields) to report on any related calculation by worker, across any date range — just in time for Year End reconciliations 🐿️

Every earning and deduction in a pay result is calculated from a few behind-the-scenes numbers. Workday calls those numbers related calculations.

For an hourly earning, it’s simple: the related calculations are the number of hours × hourly rate.

For taxes, you have different ingredients. For Federal Withholding Taxes, one of the ingredients is Supplemental Taxable Wages: the total of any bonuses, commissions, or other “extra” pay in that paycheck. And since supplemental pay can be taxed differently than a regular paycheck, Workday tracks it as its own number.

Related calculations, such as Supplemental Taxable Wages, are easy to find in an individual payroll result — it shows up as its own line item.

But reporting on them across a population? That's another story.

This is where the good stuff lives.
