I recently moved, and somewhere between the boxes and bubble wrap, I quickly realized something:

Not everything has a perfect place.

And when it doesn’t, you’ve got two options — eliminate it, or make space for it.

That’s true at home and in Workday — especially when you’re trying to group your workforce in ways that don’t fit into the four standard WD-delivered orgs:

  • Supervisory “Sup” Orgs (who reports to whom)

  • Cost Centers (where the money flows)

  • Locations (where your people sit physically)

  • Companies (what shows up on your workers’ W-2s).

These org structures are the essentials for every organization.

But what about your unique groupings that don’t fit neatly into any of them? What do you do when leadership asks you for reports by teams you don't track?

Groupings like…

  • Project Teams – Temporary assignments for staffing, budgeting, or reporting.

  • Alternate Reporting Views – Headcount by client group, function, retail store, or acquisition.

  • Learning Groups – Training based on skills or product teams, not hierarchy.

Well, Workday’s got options for those 😊

In this issue, at a high-level, we’re covering 3 flexible membership-based structures for when the standard orgs just don’t cut it:

🧩 Custom Organizations
🧩 Matrix Organizations
🧩 Flex Teams

Let’s find the structure that fits your “miscellaneous” drawer 🧦💼

Here we go!

This is where the good stuff lives.
